I went out this morning to try my luck at catching some bonefish.
I got to the park at around 5:30am. Since it was still dark, too dark to walk out onto the flats, I decided to take a nap for 20 minutes. Luckily I set my phone alarm or I would have over slept in the parking lot.
As I walked down the beach to my spot, the sun began to rise. I rigged up and began fishing.
About an hour had gone by and I had no takers so I switch to my go-to fly and started to fish. Within 10 minutes I had a bite. But it was not a bone, it was a pipefish that put up a pretty decent fight.
I began fishing my way back to the car and hooked up with a small rat bone. But, a bone is a bone, so I took some pictures and let it go. I took three steps out towards the breakers, made a cast and hooked up again.
This was a decent fish that took me into my backing. I though this fish was going to cut me off on the sharp coral at the breakers but I managed to stop it. I got it to turn and head back towards me and in a few minutes had fish number two. It measured 22 inches and weighed 6 pounds. After a few pictures I let the fish go and called it a day. Other fly people were out today and I hope they all managed to catch something.
EQUIPMENT: Use a fast action 8 or 9 weight rod and floating line with an aggressively tapered leader and heavy tippet.
